Cardio Boredom

by admin on Jun.08, 2010, under Exercise

How many of you are tired of doing the same cardio routine every time you go to the gym? I know I get bored quickly, and surprisingly… your body does too. When your body gets use to doing the same thing over and over again, it may not respond to whatever you may be trying to do (i.e. burn fat, build muscle, etc). I suggest switching up your cardio routine to something fun and enjoyable.  Consider the following routine for starters. It is easy and simple and involves you choosing three of your favorite cardio machines. Mine are the StairMill, Treadmill, and Elliptical. In your first week of cardio, try completing at least 30 minutes of cardio total, spending at least 10 minutes on each machine.  After you complete your 10 minutes on your 1st desired machine, move to the 2nd and complete the next 10 minutes, and then your 3rd. If you feel 30 minutes is too short for your total cardio, then stretch it out to 45 or 60 minutes, then evenly distribute the time amongst the machines.

BBFit1’s Beat Boredom Cardio

5 min Jump Rope warmup

10 min Incline Treadmill Walk (Incline of 15)

10 min Elliptical (Level 10)

10 min StairMill (Level 7)

5 min Cool Down

I provide the resistance levels that my body reacts to. Remember to challenge yourself if you want to see results with your body. Let’s face it, we can all go to the gym and walk on the treadmill, but good is it going to do if you settle with what you are comfortable with. PUSH YOURSELF…and you will see something change most definitely.

My 1st Competition

by admin on Jun.06, 2010, under BBFit1

Prior to me starting this blog, I was training to prepare for the 2010 NPC Virginia Gran Prix. I have always been an athletic girl, but in 2009 I decided I was going to compete in 2010.

My journey was definitely a learning experience. I thought I was a pretty fit girl, until I decided to take a couple pictures of myself. CAN WE SAY EEEKKKKK!!!! I had a lot of work to do before I go on stage with a bunch of bombshells. So, I started out by purchasing a gym membership to Gold’s Gym, which was great because they have every machine I could possibly need. Next, I consulted a local figure competitor and asked her a couple questions about diet and the NPC as a whole. She was helpful and pointed me in the right direction. So, I was off to start my transformation. Within the first two weeks, I lost 6lbs. And by the end of my first month I dropped 11 lbs. I was super stoked. But then the dreaded happened….. PLATEAU! I didn’t notice anything happening to my body, particularly my lower half. This is the only area that I was most interested in fixing, and it was being so stubborn. So, I called up cousin who also competed in Figure shows to help. She forwarded my email and a couple pictures of me to her coach. He was very helpful. However, I wish I would have more time to work with him and prepare, but nonetheless, he hooked me up with an eating plan and workout regimen to help. Well, things began to start moving again, but not fast. I still hacked at it, focusing on my legs and trying to tone them as best as I could.

Well, show time came. And even though I wasn’t comfortable with my lower body, my hubby told me I made tremendous progress and that I should be proud. And after looking at the video and pictures I am. But I’m still going to tackle my lower body and continue to trim. But at the end of the day, I love my body.

I put together this video of my first show. Enjoy it. There will be more to come.

Diet?!?!?! WTH?!?!

by admin on Jun.06, 2010, under Nutrition

I really hate the word, “Diet”. It seems like it was once a word that meant something so simple, and then it was taken out of context to achieve some type of marketing scheme. Has anyone ever Googled the word? Shocking at the amount of diets you get back, huh? Well, technically, we all are on a diet. A diet is basically the sum of food consumed by a person. Now, the way you tailor your diet or way of eating, will affect the way your body looks. The one thing I have come to learn is in order to start looking great is to tailor your meals off of three things; Low-fat, low-sugar, high-fiber eating.

Now when I say low fat, I don’t mean go out and buy all low fat products and keep them stocked in your cabinets and fridge. But rather, watch the fat content in your food. I usually try to keep it below 30 grams of fat a day. (That’s not including my cheat days)

I hate to say anything about low sugar, because I am a sugar junkie, but you have to limit the amount, especially us females. All it does is go directly to our hips and thighs. Try to get your sugar fixes from fresh fruits. It is okay to add a small amount of sugar to your tea or coffee but be mindful of the amount. Try using Splenda. OH!! With that said, stay away from sports drinks. They are worst than eating a candy bar.

I guess I forgot to say low sodium. Well, limit your salt intake. Most people who change their eating habits tend to look at easy pre-made meals. I hate to say because they are easy, but stay away from processed foods like Lean Cuisine and NutriSystem. Packaged and processed foods tend to be high in salt, sugar and fat. Now when it comes to things like tuna, which are canned, it is best to rinse them with water before eating. This way you are washing some of the salt out and lowering the salt content.

Lastly, remember to include fiber in your diet. High fiber foods are responsible for cleaning out your digestive system and some types of fiber bind with fats and toxins helping to cleanse your entire body. So, since it cleans out your insides, just start thinking of fiber as nature’s natural scrub brush!

These are just a couple of small steps you can take to help you start your new way of eating and achieve physical greatness. Give it a try.

Perfect Abs!!!

by admin on Jun.06, 2010, under Exercise

How often to do we see someone with a flat stomach and wonder, “What in the world did they do to get their stomach like? ” I know I get asked that quite often. Fortunately for me, my genes have a lot to do with it. But for others, it requires two small factors. One, eating decent. And two, doing a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise, three times a week. Notice I didn’t say eating a strict diet. Eating decent means just that…. Not eating fast food all day, everyday. It is important to ensure you are providing your body with the necessary nutrients to ensure core development. Personally, I eat a lot chicken and fish, drink lots of water, and limit my salt intake. Everyone should know that salt helps your body retain water, causing you to bloat in your midsection and many other areas in your body. The funniest thing I ever heard someone say is, ” Salt makes your feet fat.” I laughed but then I took that statement seriously. Call me a skeptic :)

When it comes to physical training, I do at least 15 mins of ab work before I begin my daily scheduled gym weight training. After I complete my weight training, I finish off my gym time with cardio for a minimum of 30 mins.  Here is a sample ab workout you can try to get yourself started.

3 sets of 20 Incline sit-ups : Helps target your lower abs

3 sets of 20 Obliques crunches: Target your sides

3 20 second Planks: Targets your core as a whole

3 sets of 20 Ball Crunches: Targets upper and middle abs

3 sets of 10 Leg Raises or Knee Raises: Target obliques and middle abs

As you continue on your ab quests, you may find yourself completing these exercises easily. With that said, I would suggest you start increasing your numbers for better results.

Hey friends. Remember this…. There’s no need to do hundreds of crunches or other ab workouts every day. Just find a few exercises that you like and do one set of each a few times a week and you will start seeing some sexy abs.

Spot reducing isn’t going to help you. You can do all the crunches in the world but if you don’t reduce your body fat you will just have really great abs that no one can see.

Recognize that having great abs is also about genetics. Having sexy abs isn’t the same look for everyone, so don’t get distressed if your stomach isn’t looking like your favorite stars or athletes. Decent eating and moderate exercise will help you achieve the best abs your genes will allow.

Stay tuned guys. I will continue to post ab workouts and essential facts as we go along. Have fun and stay healthy.
